And I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

If you usually flip through here without enlarging any of the images, do yourself a favor and make an exception for this one. Go ahead, click on it, check out the details. The sailor with the peg leg gets to me.

The sailor with the peg leg? Wouldn't that be Ahab? ;)

Very, very, very cool.

I do, too.

I love that. I love all the detail. It is like a "Where's Waldo" image of pirates and sea folk.

You just didn't want to say seamen.

beautiful. also, one of my favorite books.

You know, I've started it a half dozen times in my life, but never finished it. It's been ten years, I should give it another go.

In retrospect I wonder why I liked the book so much. There's long stretches where it gets all scientific, which are completed outdated and wrong, and equally long stretches (years, really) where they sail around the oceans without anything happening. But I got through the whole thing twice and I know I loved it both times.

If it's not the story, it's the storytelling.
