It was certainly something they'd planned to do. Even then, I don't know how many people just had extra broomsticks and coffee cans lying around in those numbers.
And to keep them from getting pinched. Unfortunately though, I looked at it again and I think that their holder buckets are way too small. The crabs would climb out. It is indeed a mystery.

Maybe lightning bugs? but then they'd probably be toting jars rather than cans for their catch. Who knows? It really is a mystery.
Good thoughts. And you wouldn't need such long poles for something like frogs. Chipmunks?
Almost definitely tadpoles. Unless of course it was crabs.
The length of the poles would certainly help to keep their feet dry.
