Bros

I won't lie, I know a couple dozen dudes who look just like these guys except without the excuse of being actual sailors. What is it about being at sea that leads to cultivating interesting facial hair?

The tradition of cultivating facial hair while at sea goes way back. Initially, the main reason was that there wasn't enough fresh water on board for everyone to get a good shave. After that it became a tradition.

The US Navy doesn't allow beards while at sea anymore, but I hear that they still let submarine crews get away with it on the sly.

I suspect that anyone who is willing to go down in a sub can get away with quite a bit on the sly that doesn't actually disrupt shit.

You know my favorite random navy tradition? Liberty cuffs.

Not a whole lot to do at sea except grow beards and tattoo each other. And...whatever.

And sing?

It would be totally worth the occasional "serenade" to be able to hang out with those guys.

Hey jdg, you know that photo you have of the community Xmas tree bonfire? We were doing that behind my house this weekend and the firemen came and told us to stop. It probably would have worked better if I didn't literally live downtown.

Wait, what? What are Liberty cuffs? Besides that, these men are HANDSOME! I would bite their arms and pull their beards! Seriously though, I agree with Mama, ain't much to do.

Damn. But really. Handsome.

p.s.
on closer inspection, four of them are handsome, two look like total douches, and the other two can't decide.

You don't know about liberty cuffs? Okay, not that long in the past Navy sailors had to wear their uniforms when they went on liberty into the port cities. But the cool ones would take one of their best sets of dress blues into a tailor and get them all secretly customed out, like with hidden zippers so they could be more fitted and with embroidery inside that could be turned to the outside. That way, they looked all killer on the street. But the most common version was just liberty cuffs, getting the inside of your cuffs embroidered so when you turned them over there was a mermaid or something to show off. They could get in trouble for it, but of course they did it anyway. Sailors.
