Shelter From A Trying Winter

Here's another story I need to know. How did these people wind up together, living in a tarpaper shack, trying to survive? Are they a mama and daddy and three kids? You know what gets to me most, though? Somehow, somewhere, they found that boy a pair of glasses.

Wow. This is so moving on so many levels to me. They look like they are straight out of The Grapes of Wrath, either that or my great-grandparents kitchen in Colorado.

I'd be willing to bet that at least one of those kids is a cousin or nephew or something. My great-grandma raised a handful of her grandkids when a couple of her own children were killed, one couple in a fire where the children escaped. The glasses were probably and uncle's old pair.

They grew alfalfa and root vegetables; raised rabbits, chickens and cows. And even made their own wine. My oldest great-aunt still lives in the house my grandpa's family moved into when he was 2. He just turned 91.

I feel the need to clarify. I don't mean they would be a cousin to me. But rather, to the other kid/s in the photo.

Wow. Just...wow. "A trying winter." You bet.
I am sincerely hoping those are the grandparents. Really. I mean, I know hard work and trying winters will age you, but that would be vastly sincere aging. I love how the kid with glasses is laughing. What is he laughing at? Everyone else is so serious.
I just love this one. Just love it, baby.

Steph, I knew what you meant. And I agree, I suspect it's not just a set of brothers. For one thing, I'm not altogether sure that the oldest boy is of the same racial background as the rest, although you can't always tell.

Mama, I think the laughing boy is a tad, well, special, as Billy puts it.

It's a good way to kill time while I'm manning the main lines in the office, stuck at my desk.

Evidently Mom, who looks like a man in drag, has been playing around, if the kid on the left is any indication. No wonder Pop looks like he's about to punch someone.

Hey. Yeah, I'm not even going to make a real guess as to everyone's relations in this one.
